How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC

There are many questions on here but none have been solved, even the ones from 8 years ago. Can anyone help? I try to transfer pictures from my phone (iPhone 11 Pro, 12 pro, 8, SE, doesn't matter) via USB or USB-c cable. This is all computers, all phones I use. Windows 10. I plug the phone it, it recognizes it as a drive, I open the drive, DCIM, and the date folder. I go in and copy anything more than 100 pictures and paste them on my hard drive. some percent will transfer (typically 1-2 minutes) and then windows explorer will crash and say "a catastrophic error has occurred" and I have to plug the phone back in before it will recognize it again. The photos app does the same thing. iTunes used to work but they removed this feature. iCloud is too expensive and insecure (it was free through iTunes, I'm not paying a penny to do the same thing they removed for free). Paid programs like "touch copy" work well but don't allow for both the IMG "E" edited version and the original IMG to be downloaded. iTunes connects well and works great for backing up but it's very frustrating that I can't mass transfer pictures anymore without paying apple even more money. Anyone had any 3rd party programs that will work for both edited and original versions or some hack to make it transfer without crashing?
