Your friend's Apple ID.....(same as iCloud ID)......is his/her email address. Chances are, he/she can recover their email address from the email provider......or he/she could use the Apple Support document to recover the password.

Now, if someone else set up the phone originally, then you will need that person's Apple ID and Password to release the lock on the phone. The phone will be useless until this occurs.
