It sounds like you're trying to pair your previously owned watch with a new iPhone.

Did you unpair it from your old phone? This needs to be done first because a watch can only pair to one phone at a time.

Look for a couple links that say, "If you have your old iPhone" and the other link, "If you don't have your old iPhone".
