Can I return an unopened replacement AirPod?

I thought I had lost one of my AirPods so ordered a replacement online. However, the following day I found mine. Tried to cancel the order but it had already shipped. Now have an unopened replacement part which I would like to return for a refund. When I went in store they said I could return it but would need to call up, when I called up they said they couldn’t replace it. Very confused, if anyone has had success please let me know how to go about this.
