Can't open/run .PKG-Files

Hi,
today i recognized that I can't open .pkg-files. I thought they are "self-extracting" files that don't need ay program to open. When i try to launch them the system asks for a program to open the files.
What should I do? I'm running 10.6.4 on a MBP.

Mac Pro Early 2008 6gb ram, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

They should be opened with the Installer app, in the System's CoreServices folder:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app

Hi

Have you been able to run/open PKG files in the past? Is is ANY .pkg file, or just one or two in particular?

As Jeffrey said, that is the application they should open with. When trying to open the PKG file, point it to that location.

If that doesn't work you may need to reinstall your OS
