Greetings gurus,
I have a weird one, one of my friends computer refuses to boot up and is greeted by a grey padlock. The Admin password does not work, and after some research it seems it's looking for a Firmware password.
I cannot boot in recovery, or while holding the option or ... you get the idea.
Any hints will be greatly appreciated.

I dearly hope you remember that Firmware password, which is separate from all others.
Your only recourse otherwise is to go to Apple with a receipt showing the serial number and demonstrating ownership. Then they may unlock it, but you may lose the contents of your boot drive in the process.

I am going to suggest that the problem is that the Mac is unable to find a functioning operating system to access. Ask your friend if he did anything prior to this occurring which may have caused it. It can also mean that the hard drive is failing.
