Time machine encryption apple id required?

I have my MBP backed up with Time Machine and its encrypted. If my Apple ID is stolen and password changed, will I be able to restore my files (notes, photos, docs) with my encrypted password?

How do you protect yourself from stolen Apple ID password? See Joanna Stern video. Scary.

Disk encryption (including Time machine backup disk encryption) and the passwords that protect it are not stored in your Apple-ID. Apple-ID information is not required, and is not sufficient for decryption of a stolen backup drive.

Apple-ID can be used as an alternate means of logging in to your Mac, provided you have physical possession of the computer. When you log in using Apple-ID credentials, your user Account information is available for local use, including disk encryption passwords stored in your user account on the computer.

What you are describing is a situation where if your computer AND its backups are stolen AND your Apple-ID is stolen, someone may have access to everything stored on your computer and its backups.

_______

If there are things that are that sensitive, maybe they do not belong on your computer at all. For example, I do not auto-fill credit card numbers, because I do not want those numbers stored on my computer anywhere. That means I occasionally have to pull out the card and enter the number manually. No Big Deal.

Thank you.

The scenario I was describing is if my iPhone was stolen and they had my passcode to my phone, they would be able to change my AppleId password, trusted devices like my MBP and lock me out of my account. Having a Time Machine backup, I would be able to restore my documents and my pictures.

However, I would not be able to turn off FindMy for my MBP since the AppleID has been changed. Effectively making the MBP a brick.

Let me try and summarize if I have this correct:

If your Iphone and password is stolen then they can:

  • change your AppleID password
  • have access to all your iCloud data:

-All of your documents replicated from your MBP to the cloud - since I replicate all files,

-All devices with FindMy would be bricked since you cannot turn it off without the appleID/password

So if this correct, how do you protect yourself from this scenario?

If recovery key is turned on, does this prevent your AppleID password from being changed without this key?

Clearly you need to protect your phone/passcode but it does happen.
