AppleTV does not update from TvOS 15.5

I have an AppleTV 4K that refuses to update from TvOS 15.5. It is set to automatic update and has also been set to beta-updates for a while.

I am not able to use the manual update, as it tells me to try again later, and I am not even able to reset and install from scratch, as it gives the same error message. I have tried to restart and delete a few apps to make more space, if that was the problem (but hard to tell, as there is very little information available)

Have you tried to fix a thing like this?

Hello Kim Gammelgård,

If you are having trouble updating your Apple TV, try the steps below to restore which can help.

Also make sure that you have a good network connection.

"

  1. Open Settings  on Apple TV.
  2. Go to System > Reset, then select Reset and Update.
  3. Selecting this option restores your Apple TV to factory settings, erases all settings and information, and updates to the latest tvOS version.

I finally fixed it.

The solution proposed did not work, Reset and Install, I already tried unsuccessfully. I did not contact Apple Support, as the AppleTV is 5 years old and long out of warranty.

What worked was:

1) open system settings

2) go to System->Reset

3) If reset+install does not work do a full reset.

Going directly to Reset, will skip the unsuccessful attempt to install any system updates that also stops the reset process, and only when the system has been reset properly, the installation will work again.

Not really helpful, as I stated, I already tried to manually update (going to system->install update, both normal (to 16.3.2 and to Beta 16.4.x), reset and install from scratch (what the instructions from support.apple.com call Reset and update), but that fails after deleting all apps, by telling me that it cannot update this moment, so please try later.

Extremely bad design, that there is only calling Apple, which most likely is not for free, as it is far out of warranty.

I also got to that state without additional help, sorry to say.

I ended up buying a new one instead of the hassle.

Hi Kim Gammelgård,

Congratulations on your new Apple TV!

If the issue was corrected by replacing/upgrading your Apple TV, it sounds like the issue was specific to the Apple TV device and not network related. If there are any other issues with your new Apple TV, or if you try to use the older one again, and still need support you'll want to reach out to Apple Support directly.

You can reach out to them by clicking here: Contact - Official Apple Support or over the phone by calling the number that is most local to your region: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support.

Kind regards!

It may be well meant, but you are not really helping just by re-iterating the stuff from the normal support pages.

If you have nothing to add, why waste the space and time and look for issues, that demand more than just copying and pasting half-baked solutions found in the support pages anyway that probably doesn't even help.

You actually discredit your own rating this way, as it shows how little extra you know, in spite of having "Community Specialist" with your name.

I was hoping for real solutions from real people, not just copying pasting from the known support pages.
