Unable to update OS after Yosemite

I have an iMac (mid-2014) running Yosemite 10.10.5 and I need to update the OS, but I keep running into issues.

  • When I go to system preferences, system update, it says no updates available.
  • I've tried to find updates on the App Store, but after setting up an Apple ID, I am unable to log into the App Store (I get a message that says user name not found).
  • When I downloaded 10.13 from the Apple community and launched the program, I get an "image" error and the update will not launch.
  • I have searched this community and others and have not found a solution to the issue.
  • I believe all the issue with the App Store and the image error are related to the out of date 10.10.5 OS.
  • I have erased the HD and reinstalled Yosemite, hoping this would help solve the issue. But it has not.

Can anyone help? I would be forever grateful! :)

Hi there!

First, download and install OS X El Capitan 10.11. You can get it here: How to download macOS - Apple Support.

Once you've downloaded the OS X El Capitan disk image (.dmg), follow these steps:

    1. Double-click the .dmg file to open it and see the .pkg file within.
    2. Double-click the .pkg file, then follow the onscreen instructions. This installs the macOS installer into your Applications folder.
    3. Open your Applications folder and double-click the macOS installer, named Install OS X El Capitan. Follow the onscreen instructions to install macOS.

After you've upgraded to OS X El Capitan, you can upgrade to macOS Big Sur. Go back to How to download macOS - Apple Support, and choose to download Big Sur 11. After the Install macOS Big Sur app has been installed, follow the on-screen steps to upgrade your Mac.

Also, before installing, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac. While installing, avoid putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac will restart, and it might show a progress bar or blank screen several times.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Jack.

I was able to download El Capitan and I received a message that installation was successful (although when I clicked on About this Mac, it still shows OS X Yosemite 10.10.5).

I then clicked on Big Sur on the How to Download MacOS - Apple Support page. A window opened asking that I click on the Open App Store. On the App Store page, I clicked on GET and input my Apple ID and PW. And once again I receive the message my Apple ID or PW is incorrect (I did try to reset the PW by clicking on "Forgot Password, and after entering my Apple ID, the toggle just spins and I am unable to change the PW).

So I'm still unable to update the OS beyond Yosemite.

So I'm unable to
