iPhone 4 speakers not working

I was out in the rain this evening and the problem of no speaker but headphones occurred for me however blowing a hair dryer into the headphone socket solved the problem within minutes.

This worked for me once, but the speaker stopped working again within seconds. The only thing that seems to fix the speaker is shaking the iphone like crazy. Most of the time it will stop working again within seconds. Such a shame since I had my iPhone with WiFi problems replaced in NYC on my holiday there. When I returned home to Amsterdam the problems started. Since there is no Apple store here (yet), I can not replace it for a new phone as easily.

i had the same problem. the sound on the speakers was comming in and out until the speakers stopped working. then i found this topic and the suggestion that Quickstr made and tried it. now the speakers on my iphone work just fine.

I live in Puerto Rico and work in an airconditioned environment and coming in and out of the office and with all the humidity that ia on the island, that it probably the reason there us condensation inside the phone causing the speakers to fault.

BTW, the tissue into the headphone socket I read from another user did not work for us. 😟

Hi everybody! I am very happy with my new iPhone 4, but when I bought it, the Speaker didn't worked. After reading the posts here, I pressed the lower right side of the phone and sound started working. It worked only one day and after that I started pressing it again and noticed that sound appears and disappears depending on how I press it. Now it works fine almost 2 days, and when I press it, during playing music, nothing happens!!! It works and sound don't disappears. It is just fine, but I want to know is this permanent solution after pressing it, or I have to replace the phone with new one?!

After deliberating over whether I really needed an iPhone for the past 3 years I took the plunge last week and went for the 16GB white edition. After figuring out how to insert the SIM card all was going well until Sunday evening when I put the iPod function on whilst washing the dishes. All went well for the first couple of songs and then the sound just cut out. After poking, prodding and shaking it my husband managed to get it working again, but I was quite disappointed that I was already having problems with it. I checked it yesterday to make sure it was working - all was well. Until today. I decided to make sure it was working again, and was annoyed to find that the speakers weren't working again - although I was getting sound through the headphones. I tried pushing the headphones into the socket, tried cleaning the connection with tissue - even connected it to my iPod dock but nothing worked. So I was skeptical when I read DempsterDavies suggestion - how could it possibly work? But it did! One quick squeeze to the right of the 'Home' button an Katy Perry was blaring out at full volume! Genius! After waiting so long to buy an iPhone I'll admit that I am disappointed that it has a 'niggle' that seems to be something I'll just have to put up with, but I'm pleased that there's a quick fix until Apple come up with something more permanent! I have the same problem with my ip 4 and also my neighbor.
After what I've read here, we have tested both versions to repair.
For me it was derr error with the moisture in the socket for the headphones and the manufacturing fault with him.
The best way to try out both.

If that were mine, I'd get it replaced under warranty. It won't get any better over time.

I'm aware the problem won't resolve itself - it may not get any worse either. From what I've read not only on this forum but also from searching across the Internet, this is a widespread problem that won't necessarily be solved by simply replacing the phone. How many times do you replace your iPhone before getting a 'good one'?!

Even if you found a few hundred (or even a few thousand) users with this problem, it wouldn't be widespread relative to the millions and millions of iPhone 4's that have been sold.

I woud expect to get a "good one" with the first replacement. I know a few dozen users with an iP4 that don't have this problem. Considering you have a 1 year warranty, you could just wait a few months and see how it plays out.

I also have a 30 day warranty with my carrier - they will replace the phone for me if the defect hasn't been caused by anything I have done. The thing is, I can't make the speakers not work - so if I take it back and the speakers are working perfectly then there's no issue and i probably won't get a replacement phone!

I had the same issue with my iPhone 4 just now - no sound out of the earpiece when making a call but sound through the headphones. After reading someone else's suggestion about condensation I tried rolling up a bit of kitchen roll, poking and rotating it in the headphone socket and voilà! the earpiece started working again 🙂.

If you click the up and down buttons and it says ringer (headphone) and no headphones are connected, you know it's an issue with the 3.5mm jack contacts still being closed. P.S. I don’t condone anyone poking anything in to the headphone jack - this is at your own risk!

I just got my iPhone 4, 3 days ago.. I just had the same problem. While i was sleeping i knocked a glass of water off the nightstand and it spilt near my phone.. not touching but just near it. This mornin i tried playing music and nothing played, then i got a call and the riger worked, but i could not hear through the ear hole, only when it was put on speaker or through my head phones. I then tried to blowdry it and no luck.. The thing that worked was getting a q-tip and peeling the bulky layer of cotton off until it fits in the headphone jack and push it in (not too hard). Then after this it was back to normal

I read all the posts, and tried what you said before doing anything else, just squeezing around the lower right corner of the IP4G, and sure enough, the external speaker is back on in less than a couple minutes of messing with it. I did not use any tissues or wipe anything with a pin, but my phone has been used here in Florida and definitely high humidity. It seems the connection is loose inside and comes and goes depends how I squeeze it, but for now, its on. Thanks so much. I will go get it fixed or replaced but at least I know I can get by with it until I pick a convenient time for the outage. My phone is about 6 months new.
