iPhone 4 speakers not working

Since getting my new iPhone 4 the speakers won't work. I get sound through headphones, but not through speakers. Occasionally I will get sound (clicking when unlocking) but then it goes again. Does anyone know what's wrong and/or how to fix it?

This worked for me:

1) Plug headphones in.

2) Play some music with the volume up (needs to be via the built-in music player).

3) Unplug headphones. The music should stop. NOTICE the volume slider on the screen moved from the level it was initially set to to the minimum (or off, I guess).

4) Slide the volume up to where you want it.

5) Press play, and hear the music through the built-in speaker!

I am so happy that I figured out my no sound from iPhone 4's speakers. Brand new phone; speaker suddenly stopped working, no rings, game sound effects, etc.

I noticed an small oblong button/switch just superior to the volume buttons. This switch seems to be a mute button that displays a thin orange line when the phone is in mute mode. Slide it the other way, & the sound returns!

I woke up this morning to my phone vibrating and no sound. My bluetooth sound and headphnone sound still worked, but no built in speaker sound. I started reading posts on this fourm. I tried the tissue in the headphone jack, that didnt work. When i pluged and unpluged the headphone jack the volume bar changed so i knew that the phone was recognizing the removal of the headphones. I then tried blowing in the speaker on the bottom of the phone. That fixed it.

I had to get a replacement Iphone when it arrived i plugged it into Itunes and backed it up.It was then i noticed that there was no sound coming from it.I got in touch with apple and set up a repair and they sent me another phone (which is working fine) I had a text from Apple telling me that they had found accidental damage/abuse and they would be charging me £119.Now the problem i have is i only had the phone long enough to back it up.Basically the replacement phone i recieved was faulty and i am being made to pay for it.I've complained and complained but they said there is nothing they can do about it.😠

I read through all the fixes in this forum, thread, discussion, what ever its called and the only one that worked was getting a new iPhone 4s. I've had it a day and put it back in my Mophie charger so we'll see what happens. I'll write back if my sound goes out again. Apple didn't hesitate to give me a new phone by the way. They didn't even discuss repair.

Just wanted to update, took the phone back to Apple as the speakers were still not working. They tested it and said the microphone wasn't working, it was a fault that couldn't be repaired and we have to replace the phone.

Simple test that you can do to check what kind of issue it is:

Go to your Voice Memos App and a microphone picture should come up. Make some noise and the gauge at the bottom should move. If it doesn't the the microphone is likly to be stuffed and you'll need a new phone. If it does move then it's likely to be a headphone jack problem.
