Since getting my new iPhone 4 the speakers won't work. I get sound through headphones, but not through speakers. Occasionally I will get sound (clicking when unlocking) but then it goes again. Does anyone know what's wrong and/or how to fix it?
I'm getting the same problem. The phone is NOT on silent mode. I get sound from the speakers from time to time, but it will soon die out. When the sound stops working, I'm not moving the iPhone or anything. It just stops emitting sound. Sound through headphones or external speakers still works. I'm thinking it's a loose wire or something?
I don't want to send my phone in as I will be without a phone for a while, but iPhone 4s are out of stock everywhere so I can't get replacement...
Hi, found this on another forum. The problem is almost certainly due to condensation in the headphone jack. Others suggested repeatedly inserting and removing the headphone plug. I fixed my problem by blowing on the headphone jack with a hair dryer.
Hmmm, That has me wondering what condensation from what?
But ever since I started reading about the problem I have always been suspicious of a CHEAP headset jack. In most systems the headset jack is also the switch that disconnects the speaker when on headphones. If the switch get bent or stuck that is the end of your speaker function.
I agree if you are very lucky you may be able to clear the jam by repeatedly inserting the headphone plug.
This is the reason I have not used the headset on my iP4. Just another built-in booby-trap from Apple. So I might as well have a phone that does not play MP3 files because I am afraid to use the headphone jack.
I did use the jack on my 3GS and never had any problems but prior to getting the iP4 I heard of this problems and so now I don't have the ga-zongas to give it a try. Since I read of this I truly believed it to be a faulty headset jack.
Now that I think about it I probably should try it to make sure mine is OK and if have phone replaced - Thanks Apple - I should have stayed with the 3GS. The only thing the iP4 does that the 3GS didn't is "Face Time" and I don't know anyone else that has an iPhone 4 so that function is not very valuable to me - Ugh!
Huh??? There are millions of people using headphones on IP4's! Very occasionally the phone can get stuck in headphone mode due to dust, or lint or condensation getting into the socket. It's easily fixed. I don't know why you're trying to turn it into a major scare story. Is it attention-seeking?
I think not. The only regret I have about my post is that my reply was posted while my eye lids were propped up with toothpicks and I didn't recheck the post for grammar ans spelling.
I don't know how many people are using there iPhone 4 headset feature nor do I have any idea what percentage of those that have used the headset have had this problem. So for the moment I will just go with your statistics, except for the part about "dust, lint and condensation".
I do believe that dust, and lint can cause a major problem I will restate my original question "What Condensation?".
AKRBTN, I would like to keep this conversation civilized. So I am now entering this post while using my headphones. Actually I am glad you offended me enough to get off my fear-fence and try mine out to see if mine is going to be one that fails or survives.
Also, from memory most of the posts I have read about this particular problem appear to be from people on their first few days of use. So unless these folks are extremely hard on their phones I still have trouble believing that the malfunction is from dust/grit and lint and someone will still have to explain where the "condensation" is coming from before I will even consider that one.
PS - if your comments about dust, lint and condensation and my comments concerning a possible defective headphone jack get people to be observant of how they treat their phones and attempt to discern the difference between FOD and defective components we may start getting more accurate descriptions of how and why the problem developed on individual phones. I personally hope your conclusion that it is FOD damage is correct. But I still think that may be a little bit of a premature conclusion as well as mine, time will tell.

I have noticed that my iPhone 4 will do the same thing if I use a certain 1st generation iPhone charger.
Are you saying that if you use a particular charger you have this problem? Does this only happen while connected to the weird charger and not the one that came with the phone?
Your problem is very strange and so far at least IMO unique.
Sorry, maybe I should have been more specific. It was this bit that got me going...

There's a totally routine explanation for how the phone can *very occasionally* get stuck in headphone mode - it's happened to mine, it's happened to my daughter's - and it is very easily fixed. I don't get this fear you have about using your headset.

*OK I'll bite, what is the routine explanation for why the phones get hung up in headphone mode? And how is it easily fixed?*
Well, I just realized just now that only the right speaker is working! The left isnt. it's so hard to tell cause it's still giving sound.. then I accidentally covered the right speaker and bam, the left doesnt actually work!!! I've my iphone for a month now. ***! :S
I just experienced the problem of the iphone 4 speakers not working as described above, but the phone ringer still works and headphones still worked when plugged in,this just happened after I spilt a glass of water on the table near the i phone and used the hair dryer technique mentioned above to no avail. I rolled up a portion of a tissue and placed it in the head phone socket of the phone and it was damp when removed !! I repeated this a few times till the tissue was dry and now the phone works properly as before, huge relief to say the least, moral of the story KEEP water away from these devices, hope this helps someone regards
