iMac 2010, mail has stopped sending or receiving after long shutdown

Hi, this is a strange one. As we were out of the country my iMac was shut down for 4 months. Now it won't send or receive mail in Mail as it used to before the shut down. It's running iOS High Sierra 10.13.6. it won't update any further.

However, if I log into Google Chrome, then I can get or send email via that, so it's not my ISP (Vodafone). Also I can send and receive mail on my other devices (iPhoneX, iPad).

In Mail preferences it shows that Mail for my gmail account is off line. Any idea's how to get it on line? I've tried quitting and restarting mail.

In Mail preferences it shows that iCloud is on line, but when I click on it, it says no new mail available, it doesn't send either.

When I've queried Google on line, it asks for my password, but when I enter it I get an error message 400, sayings it's an invalid request!

Any ideas on what to do would be gratefully received! Thank you.

Best wishes Amer

Hello Amersaad,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

These steps should be able to help you get your account back online:

"Check for status messages

You might see a status icon such as a lightning bolt  or warning symbol next to your account's inbox in the Mail sidebar, or in the upper-right corner of the Mail window. Click it to learn more.

  • If the status is Network Offline, make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet, then try again.
  • If the status is Login Failed, check with your email service provider (ESP) to be sure that your account is set up correctly on your Mac.
  • If Mail asks for your password, but entering the password doesn't help, find out why your email provider is rejecting your password.
  • If your email service is experiencing a temporary outage, your email provider might have a status message on their website. For example, Apple's system status page shows the status of iCloud Mail. Status pages are also available for other email services, such as Gmail and Outlook. Some brief service outages might not appear on a system status page, so you might want to wait a few hours and try again."

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? Are you experiencing issues with any other mail accounts? Also, are you able to send email?

Cheers!
