What version of macOS are you using? You can find out by going to the Apple menu  > About This Mac.

You can install 10.14.

In my opinion this machine is far from obsolete. I was forced to upgrade 10 months ago due to the minimum version of Xcode that could upload apps requiring Mac OS11.
