Resource issues on Guardian UK website

Ever since downloading Safari 16.3.1 (16614.4.6.11.7, 16614) the other day (on MacOS 11.7.4) opening more than one tab on the Guardian web site sends my MacBook into overdrive.

My normal habit is to open the home page and then open other pages in new tabs. This still works with other sites but for this newspaper it has suddenly caused a problem.

I can still open the other pages in the original tab without any problem, it's as if any two pages start to compete with each other for resources.

Maybe this is a new policy on their part to punish me for not subscribing.

Any ideas?

Thanks for that.

I've now encountered the same issue on a separate site - not news bet fairly heavy graphics.

Looking at the activity monitor with two tabs open it showed an entry for the Web site using about 100% cpu.

But if I brought a separate tab to the front that figure drops right down.

Using one of the suggestions from you link I tried in a Private Window. There is no longer a heavy usage in the name of the Web site. I might try clearing the history next.

I just found it suspicious that I got these issues immediately after installing a Safari update.

Some websites are just notoriously resource-intensive. Perhaps that is one of them.

"News" sites in general are by far the worst offenders. If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn't working as expected - Apple Support has a number of suggestions. Review all of them. Often, clearing Safari's stored data and / or history will mitigate unexpected behavior.
