I believe that most newer computers can be directly upgraded, but only those which are new enough to accept Ventura may be so upgraded. If you are running High Sierra it is likely that your computer is too old. You can check specifications Apple's web site or tell us the year and model of your Mac. That is what determines what the latest OS that can be installed.
