Apple Pencil 2 just stops working on iPad AIr 5 with iOS 16.2 2023

This is my 2nd day of using the Pencil with GoodNotes. It is paired, it is charged, as is my iPad, and it WORKS...until it stops. This happened on day 1. Then Day 2, it starts working again, and nothing has changed. Then it stopped. I have seen this occurring in past years with the earlier iPad's, iOS and Pencils. But now I have brand new equipment. So...?

Hello mariannesiphone,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We see you have some questions about your Apple Pencil, and we'd like to help. As you're having issues connecting, the following link can provide some great steps to help with this: Pair Apple Pencil with your iPad

If your Apple Pencil won't pair with your iPad
1) Connect your Apple Pencil to your ipad:
•With Apple Pencil (2nd generation): Center your Apple Pencil on the magnetic connector, which is on the side of your iPad with the volume buttons.
•With Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (6th through 9th generations): Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad.
•With Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (10th generation): Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil and a USB-C cable into the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter. Plug the other end of the cable into your iPad.
2) Restart your iPad, then try to pair again.
3) Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
On the same screen, find your Apple Pencil under My Devices. If you find it, tap Information icon. Then tap Forget this Device.
Connect your Apple Pencil into your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds.
If the Pair button doesn't appear, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until the Pair button appears.
If the Pair button still doesn't appear, contact Apple Support.

Regards.

mariannesiphone,

Bluetooth is needed in order the Pencil to stay connected to the iPad. That's why you want to reset the connection to it from the steps in the previous message.

Also, if you haven't already and to improve compatibility with the Pencil to apps and the iPad, update both especially since you only mentioned one app (GoodNotes):

  1. The latest version is 16.3.1: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
  2. How to manually update apps on your Apple device - Apple Support

If you have done that already, you'll want to reach out to Apple directly for more help as they'd be better equipped to look into this further with you: Get Support

If this is only happening with GoodNotes, you'll want to reach out to their developers for more help since it is their app: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

Take care.
