Corrupt Owner Account (Ventura)

On 2020 Mac Mini, recently bought as new.

I've become completely unable to open Safari, but only in my main owner account. It works fine in a newly created 2nd Administrator account. I've tried a gang of troubleshooting measures from various pages, but one problem may be these are pre-Ventura fix suggestion pages (- thanks Apple for the 14 year old thread suggestions, I've put a 2008 calendar on Ebay you might enjoy - ) including Safety Mode restarts, deleting Safari preferences & others, reinstalled Ventura, I can barely remember them all.

I've heard Chrome causes problems (I use Final Cut Pro) so I uninstalled that but of course there's no way to uninstall & thus reinstall Safari. I've started having serious performance issues also with Final Cut that I expect to be related, and what a bummer on a brand new rig. I'd downgrade to Monterey or whatever if it helped, but Ventura was the initial install so presumably there's no way to do that either.

I've seen mention of changed User permissions in some folders causing problems, and I followed a routine to troubleshoot the Home Folder, but I don't know what others I might check, I did change a permission somewhere I may not remember, but it was just changing Additional Users from Read only to Read and Write. Could that be it? I'm exhausted, been trying to fix this for 3 days now.

Any help more than appreciated. - Brian

Well here I thought I had already tried Shift + Open to try Safe Mode, and that it didn't work, but cut my legs off and call me shorty, it actually opened and after uninstalling all extensions, it is working. Wow what a great surprise, thank you.

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Since you've tried the Safe Mode boot try the following in order as necessary:

1 - boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down  - Intel Macs) or  (How to Boot an M1 Mac into Recovery Mode), select Disk Utility and run First Aid on all available volumes. Reboot normally and see if the problem persists.

2 - repeat #1 but this time reinstall the system. This will not affect the user data.

Try launching Safari while holding the Shift key which should start Safari in Safe Mode. If this works, then you can check your browser extensions for a problem and clearing the browser cache. There may be some other Safari setting you can check on clearing (I don't use Safari so I don't know what options are available).

If this does not work, then try deleting the Safari .plist preference file in the user accounts hidden Library/Preferences folder. I'm not sure what other preference files there may be.

I've heeded most advice on not adding "cleaners" and the like, but even cautious sites often recommend Onyx which is a well respected shareware (no scammy profit motive) - in fact it was recommended by my chosen local computer repair place. Their link at Titanium Software I also use a suite of troubleshooting tools under the brand Digital Rebellion, they are made specifically to fix problems for video editors including corrupted media, but a lot of other cache / preferences type functions. They have also served me well, but neither have solved this.

I have done recovery mode Disk Utility, the drives are clean as a whistle. If only that solved the problem. I have reinstalled also, so I'm scratching my head bigtime. I think it's time to consult that place I mentioned. Cheers.

Yes, especially helpful when you may need to trash extensions - but can't open Safari to do so! Not to mention troubleshoot surfing on new browsers like Opera and Vivaldi, because word is Chrome is terrible with Final Cut now. Trying to solve one problem, the new problems before that's possible start multiplying like bacteria.
