Yesterday I was able to open a sparsebundle (not Time Machine) that I use frequently.
Today this happens (I have created a new sparsebunde as a test example)
I am bewildered. Help, please

That has given me a big clue, though. All my file associations have been reset to default and all my mail rules have vanished at the same time.
I’m reinstalling Ventura from the recovery partition. If that solves it I’ll let you know
If you get info on it, what is set for the default application. I’m not sure what it should be, but I think it is diskimagemounter.
Whatever the issue was, a full reinstall and recovery from TM solved it. Thank you @Barney-15E for your help.
I don’t think I would advise reinstalling from TM as the problem is abnormal to the rest of the community. I would think it’s somehow a problem on your Mac. A lot of people are having various different problems with file sharing that are not consistent across the community, so quite possible it’s some weird bug in the OS.
The only way to troubleshoot that would be to erase and reinstall without migrating any users or data. Check the system completely clean and then migrate your user account after confirming the problem.
Because the sparsebundle issue is a symptom, not the problem, Apple has advised restoring from TM. I must admit I struggled not to say a very rude word.
You make a strong point. However I am half way through the process at support’s suggestion. I can always take a step back if I have to

CMD I shows "None" and I cannot at present see how to select diskimagemounter:
The App Store option doesn't have it, and "Other" cannot find it
