Localize Desktop folder ...

After trying to use Dropbox Backup, my desktop folder has been renamed Desktop (in English) while it should be localized to Bureau (in French Canadian).

What can I do about that ?

That sounds like a DropBox bug. I have no idea what they did. It might correct itself if you uninstall DropBox and restart.

These localizations are all implemented after the fact. The name of the folder is "Desktop" everywhere in the world. It only displays with a localized name.

I poked around and it turns out that there is a hidden file in the "Desktop" folder and similar folders that enables this feature. It is an empty file named ".localized". You can recreate an empty file with that name and it will fix the program. You can do that in the Terminal with this command:

touch ~/Desktop/.localized

However, DropBox never should have deleted this file. Your Desktop folder could be an iCloud folder, which would be really bad. If DropBox deleted this file before, it might do so again. There is no fix for software that will break functionality on its own, other than uninstalling said software.

Hi jreeves53,

Thanks for connecting with us here in Apple Support Communities. It appears that the desktop folder for your Mac has changed. If this is specifically related to your Mac and not DropBox, then you'll want to verify that your language and region settings are correct on your Mac. You can see how to to verify this here: Change Language & Region settings on Mac - Apple Support

You can also try renaming the folder. Details about this can be found here: Rename files, folders, and disks on Mac - Apple Support

If t his issue is about a DropBox folder then you will need to address them directly.

Have a great day.
