After Logging In MacBook Freezes Doing Updates

Recently, after I log into my MacBook, the updates bar shows up and begins doing updates like normal but then freezes every time halfway through.

I've tried starting in safe mode, cleaning my disk, resetting my NVAM (I think that's what it's called), and looking for other options through simple Google searches, but I have not found anything that works.

Each of these attempts meant restarting repeatedly, and each time I still end up with the updates bar halfway completed after logging in. And I did try logging in to my partner's profile as well, and same result.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help!

Thank you. I’ve given it up to two days to do updates. I never interrupted the first time the updated started, and left my laptop on the charger and it didn’t move for two days. Excessive, I know, but wanted to avoid what you mentioned.

I should clarify it was disk repair, when you hit command+r, within disk utility. I’ve also tried reinstalling so Ventura.

Two days is way too long. Two hours should be enough.

Do you have a good backup of your files? If so, you may want to restore you Mac to its initial factory state.

Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings - Apple Support

Then on first boot up, it will act like a new Mac and you can migrate from your backup user accounts and files ONLY (nothing else). Then, before installing anything, update the MacOS. Then reinstall your applications, but do not install any anti-virus, cleaning or optimizing software, etc.

If you are not comfortable with the above, which is a fairly drastic measure (but very doable, I have done it) or you do not have a reliable and complete backup, I would contact Apple Service: Contact - Official Apple Support

You can also make an appointment to go to an Apple Store Genius Bar or to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to address this issue.

If you think there is a chance of a hardware cause for this issue, I would immediately contact Apple Service or go to an AASP.

How much time are you allowing for the updates? Ventura MacOS updates can take 30, 45, 60 minutes or more, especially if previous updates were interrupted. At times, the progress bar does not advance or the screen goes black for upwards of 60 seconds (or more), during those times firmware updates are applied, if you interrupt (e.g. reboot) the Mac then, it can end up in an unusable state and might require a complete erase/restore.

"Cleaning my disk ..." What have you done to clean to disk, exactly. That is concerning also.

Hello frozenaisle,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If your Mac isn't starting correctly, we suggest following the steps below to resolve the issue. Give them a try and let us know if you have any questions.

If your Mac starts up to an Apple logo or progress bar - Apple Support

"If your Mac is stuck on this screen or keeps restarting

If startup never progresses beyond an Apple logo or progress bar:

  1. Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off.
  2. Every Mac has a power button. On laptop computers that have Touch ID, press and hold Touch ID.
  3. Turn your Mac back on.
  4. If the issue persists, press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off. Then unplug all nonessential accessories from your Mac, including printers, drives, and USB hubs. You could have an issue with one or more of those devices or their cables.
  5. Turn your Mac back on.
  6. If the issue persists, once again press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off.
  7. Repair your startup disk as described in How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility.
  8. If the issue persists, reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery.

If you need help, contact Apple Support."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
