When I press the D key at start up on my iMac it goes into Recovery mode, not Diagnostics mode. Is this normal?

Depending on the year of your Mac, Apple Diagnostics may not be available. 2012 and earlier Macs Instead will launch Apple Hardware Test with that startup key.
Wow, thanks for the quick reply. So I booted while holding down the Command-D and it just booted normally!
What do you make of that?
It would help us to know what model and year Mac you are using and which version MacOS.
