Unable to pair/reset second-hand AirPods (A2302, 2nd gen)

Dear community/experts,

I'm (or was) a happy owner of a 2nd gen. AirPods until the charging pin/cap on one of my AirPods simply fell off, so I started to ponder how to repair or replace them. After looking through the various options, I found a single AirPod (same model, namely A2302) on eBay and decided to trust the seller and give it a try.

The single AirPod arrived today but I've been unable to use it. I removed the AirPods from all my devices and then attempted to pair both working earpieces. But the charging case keeps flashing amber, I've tried countless times to hard-reset the AirPods by pressing the button on the case (sometimes for even a minute) but there's no change in the LED indicator, it just keeps flashing. If I just try to reset/pair the charging case and my working left AirPod it works.

Do you have any idea on how to solve this issue?

"Set up your AirPods or charging case

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the Information button next to your AirPods.
Tap Forget This Device.
Tap Forget Device, and tap again to confirm.
Put both AirPods in your charging case.
Open the lid and check the status light. It should flash amber.
Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for a few seconds. The status light should flash white.*
Go to the Home Screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Open the case—with your AirPods inside—and hold it next to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. A setup animation appears on your screen.
Tap Connect, then tap Done."
