Sony A7r5 raw files.

I recently bought a Sony A7r5 camera but Photos for Mac won't open the images, it downloads a grayed out empty thumbnail. The iMac is running Ventura 13.2.1 and is up to date. When will an update be released to include this new camera? Other software apps such as Lightroom have this camera registered already however I prefer Photos for Mac for the work I do especially since it doesn't include a subscription. An update would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

iMac 27″, macOS 13.2

You'll need to contact Apple for an update. No one here knows what plans they have - if any - to add raw support for a particular model. It can happen quickly. Or take months. Or not at all, though that's unlikely with a major Sony release. Adobe write their own raw support so it's independent of the OS. They're faster doing it as it's a priority for them. Not sure the same can be said of Apple these days. You get what you pay for.

In the mean time you could try convert the Raws to DNG with Adobe's free converter.

If you want to be sure, that your camera will have raw support by Apple, buy the camera only after Apple has released the RAW support. While the camera is not yet RAW supported, we can never be sure, if the camera will be supported at all, or if all RAW formats of the camera will be supported.

Sometimes the compressed RAW formats will not be supported, as you can see in the footnotes on this list:

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura - Apple Support

As the camera has been announced only recently, on October 26, 2022, there is still hope for the RAW support to be released.
