Sampler in GarageBand on the iPad

Why when I use the sampler with an audio sample is the original sample a different key on the sampler every time? Shouldn’t the original sample always be middle C? But it’s not…and it makes teaching students how to sample very difficult…is there a rhyme or reason for which key the original sample will be each time? Is it connected to tempo/bpm?
