So being the moron I am, I brought my iPad pro to the bar last night to work on my art. On the way home, it fell out of my backpack and the screen cracked. My primary use for the ipad is digital art and I'm wondering if using the apple pencil in conjunction with the cracks might cause further damage. Does anybody have any experience with this?

If repair/replacement is not an option to you, currently, you could try putting a thin, plastic film screen protector over the cracked glass screen.
That would, at least, give your Pencil a smooth surface to write over instead of the glass cracks interferring with the use of the Apple Pencil.
But my other comments still stand. Your iPad is damaged and may have other internal damages and could get any future potential damages to the underlying LCD screen from the various pieces of the cracked glass from underneath.
Again, do what you will.

Time to use the support link in the Apple Website black menu bar to schedule an apoointment with your nearest, local Apple Store to have your iPad Pro diagnosed and options presented to you.
