screenshot panel not visible

I use screenshot a LOT. Suddenly, there is no screenshot panel visible. I can click and swipe over an area, and it highlights and takes a screen shot, but I can't change anything - like destination or full screen or one window, etc.

I have restarted twice

I have searched all the other desktops for the missing panel.

Cannot find anything.

This has to be simple, but it is baffling me

One other thing you can try is to delete the preference files associated with screenshots.

I am thinking that maybe the plist got corrupted, and somehow the location of the panel got set to a location that ends up offscreen.

In any case, if it does not help, it can't hurt to try. At most you may have to set your options again.

In Finder, press Command-Shift-G, paste

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screencapture.plist

and press enter.

Drag that file, as well as the one next to it, named com.apple.screencaptureui.plist,

out of the folder, and park it on the desktop, for example.

Log out and back in, and try.

New plist files will be created automatically.

If the problem is fixed, great. If not, and if you choose, to, you can put the old files back.

So the user is saying, in the image below using Shift Command 5 is not appearing ?

Then do attempt

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

AH SUCCESS!

Luis - I liked your suggestion so much, I pursued it. I went to time machine and restored both the plist files as they existed last month, before the problem

I restarted.

the panel is back

interestingly - this happened: The ...screencapture.plist file was recreated at startup, however, the ... screencaptureui.plist file was the one that existed on Feb 8. In other words- when I restarted - the ...ui file was not recreated...

Thanks to both of you - couldn't have done it without you

Good thought - my first idea was that the panel was somewhere on the screen that I couldn't see. Searched all the desktops and couldn't come up with it.

I like the suggestion. Did it, No effect.

However - here is potentially a clue

The file " com.apple.screencaptureui.plist" was moved with the other to the desktop, however when I logged out, then in, the file "com.apple.screencapture.plist" was re-created in the Library, but the com.apple.screencaptureui.plist file was not.

I am guessing the "UI" has to do with user interface, and perhaps how things are displayed. The fact it wasn't recreated feels like potentially a source of the bug.

Thanks for the reply.

So - either Cmd-Shft-5 or clicking on the Screenshot icon would usually bring up the panel. It does not .I get only the large plus sign that allows you to select an area and then return captures it = = but - not sure what form it is in. In other words- It is not in the clipboard, it does not open preview, it's just an image in a small window in the lower part of the screen.

No panel means no options.

and I have restarted several times, I am about ready to reload software.
