IMESSAGE freezing, not opening, graying out in settings . . . SOFTWARE issue? March 2023

So one week ago my iPhone 11PRO suddenly starting missing messages, not syncing with other devices, and freezing up when I did all the diagnostic stuff (toggling on/off in settings, rebooting, yada yada). Then again, sometimes the app opens up just fine and works properly . . . but not for long now.

Apple store ran diagnostics, all good. New battery installed because was due. Fine. Problem started again the minute I got home. All my other devices sync with each other and from the cloud. Just this one now has the problem. Facetime opening intermittently, too, when this freeze happens. Of course, the key word with all this is INTERMITTENT (and of course this did not happen during Genius Bar visit.) All other apps have no problem. Current with IOS 16.3.1.

ANYONE ELSE having this issue? Lemme know your thoughts on fixing - thanks.

Hey there IMcbears,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

If having issues with the Messages and FaceTime not working as expected, give the steps listed in the following resource a try that can help with this specific issue: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support

If an app on your iPhone or iPad doesn't work as expected, try this.

1. Close and reopen the app
Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

2. Restart your device
Restart your iPhone or restart your iPad. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

3. Check for updates
To see if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then scroll down to see if updates are available. If updates aren't available for the app, update the software on your iPhone or iPad.

4. Delete the app, then redownload it
Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

Also, you stated that the issue returned after arriving back home from the Apple Store, correct? If so, while at home do you notice if the issue occurs only while connected to a Wi-Fi network, or does the issue occur if you have Wi-Fi turned off and connected to a cellular network as well?

If only occurring while connected to your home's Wi-Fi network, try resetting your Wi-Fi modem and router. While other devices may not be affected, this can refresh the Wi-Fi connection with your iPhone, and may be able to help with the issues you're seeing.

Keep us updated on the results.

Have a great day!
