"You Shut Down Your Computer Because of a Problem" warning

I have been getting a "You Shut Down Your Computer Because of a Problem" warning every time I restart my computer which I only do occasionally, usually just to clear the memory.

How can I reset that warning? I've tried various utilities (Disk Utility, etc), have run Disk Utility from Recovery, and have rebuilt the PRAM—all to no avail. I still get this error message every time I restart my computer.

The warning has affected the Date and Time - that is the only thing I have noticed at the moment. I am working on a 2020 iMac.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Disconnect ALL External drives
  2. Shutdown all open Applications
  3. Do not Log Out
  4. Shutdown the computer via the image below and Do Not Enable " Open windows when Logging back in "
  5. Keep ALL External Drives disconnected
  6. Startup the computer using the Power Button
  7. Does the Error message occur ?

My first suggestion would be, to make sure you first completely close all your applications that are running. Then try shutting down and not rebooting. Then restart the computer. Sounds like either an application or a background application service is still running when you shut down or reboot.

My husband logs out of and shuts down all his applications before shutting down, so this does not seem to be the problem. I have already tried an SMC reset, as well as a PRAM reset, and also shutting down through the system preferences.

Thank you for the suggestions!
