iPhone won’t load older messages in iMessage

I have an iPhone 11 pro. I’ve been trying to scroll back on a conversation with a friend but iMessage won’t load past 2019 and just crashes. I do not use iCloud and messages are set to save forever and I have 150gb of free space on the phone. If I search key words iMessage will show a preview but when you try to click on the message to bring you to it; it just goes to the latest present day message.

I can go back to 2014 when I first got an iPhone on every other conversation no problem. But this one conversation just won’t load past 2019 and just full on crashes iMessage. I’ve tried rebooting the phone, making sure no other apps are running, turning Siri on and off, and resetting settings but nothing. I’m at a lost on how I can access those messages. Any suggestions are appreciated, thank you.
