That linked article above says (for Mac):
"If you can't see the other device in AirDrop
Make sure that both devices are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
Choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder, then check the ”Allow me to be discovered by” setting in the AirDrop window"
There is more info. in the article if needed.

Hi Energy_Steven
welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community!
Apple support's article (link below)has info on receiving Airdrop on Mac.
To troubleshoot:
Eg: scroll to:
"Receive content with AirDrop"
and to:
"If you can't see the other device in AirDrop"
to check out what to do.
Use AirDrop on your Mac - Apple Support
All the best :-)
So it could be that the iPhone can not send ?
You might want to check through "Before you begin" in the article below:
(ie: to see if all requirements are being met)

Re: Could it be a hardware issue?
Sorry, I do not know ... if you want to check for hardware issues on the Mac mini,
you could: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support
First, you might want to "Restart" your iPhone, and your Mac mini. (Apple menu > Restart) When things are not working right, restarting will often clear the way, and put things in order.
My phone will send to other phones and my daughters MacBook Pro just not to my Mini. I did the diagnostics and it said that there were no issues. It didn't recognized my bluetooth keyboard or mouse. I had to plug in a usb mouse to complete the test. I will have to take it to an Apple Store and see if they can find something.
You might want to check that you have listed yourself in "Contacts" in both the phone and the MacMini, at that seems to be a requirement.
There's also some (non-Apple) trouble-shooting articles (like the one below) online.

You might want to contact (online chat, phone, eMail etc.) Mac mini Support:
There's a "Get Support" link at the bottom of their webpage below:

Thank you for running diagnostics .. great there are no issues there.
Re: "take it to an Apple Store and see if they can find something".
Seems they troubleshoot hardware issues by appointment:
Thank you for the quick response.
I can see both my phone on my Mac and my Mac on my phone. I am able to sent things to my phone from my Mac but not from phone to Mac. It just shows waiting on my phone. I place my phone right next to my Mac so distance isn't the issue. Could it be a hardware issue?
my problem is the other way around; iPhone/Ipad 'see' and send items to the mac mini, but the mac does not list any device at all
