Apple Music starts automatically when I remove my AirPod Pro's

This has been happening for quite some time. Whenever I remove my AirPod Pros from my ears to place them in their case, Apple Music starts playing on either my Macbook Pro, or sometimes my iPhone 13. I was reading possible causes, so I guess I should note that I am a subscriber to Apple Music.

Any fixes or advice?

Hi dr_freeze,

We'd recommend resetting the AirPods and pairing them again to see if the issue persists. You can learn how to do that here:

"You might need to reset your AirPods if they won't charge, or to fix a different issue.

  1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
  4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
    • If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
    • If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.
  1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.
  2. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*"

Take care.

This is reported by thousands of other users in other threads going back to 2020. Please investigate.

  • Happens to me across multiple pairs of AirPods, after multiple resets for various reasons.
  • Note that what happens is not just a 'Play' command. Even when what's in 'Now Playing' is another app, it's still Apple Music which opens and begins playing.
  • (Plus, it seems to perhaps happen when the case closes, not while I'm handling the actual pods, when there would be an understandable possibility of an accidental click on the 'Play' command.)

This has been a problem for years. I don't think Apple acknowledges it or cares either way. I've disabled ear detection and it still happens. Perhaps this is a problem with that setting not working correctly? I'm on the verge of switching to non-Apple headphones. It's incredibly annoying especially when you have many conference calls and have to quit Apple Music several times a day.

I’m having a similar problem. If I’m using my AirPods with one app, and then briefly remove them from my ears (e.g., to have a conversation) when I replace them in my ears they start playing music from the Music app even though I don’t have that app open and I was using a different app before removing them from my ears. This is really annoying. Turning off Automatic Ear Detection does not fix it.

"Me too", except it's with "escape" branded airbuds and Raycon headphones.

Most of the time, but not always.

macOS Monterey 12.6.8 / Music.app v 1.2.5

I would be happy if I could disable Music.app from launching spontaneously for any reason other than purposely selecting it in the Dock or Finder. There must be some command I could use in Terminal.

In my case it happens when I put the AirPods in my ears to use it with my MacBook - mostly to use them with a Zoom video conference. The Music application starts up, and random music starts playing. I then need to kill the Music app.

This is SUPER ANNOYING when using the AirPods professionally, like I do.

Funnier (?): when I remove the AirPods and put them back in the case, then SIRI STARTS UP.

This thing is clearly NOT READY FOR PROFESSIONAL USE.
