Can't tap and hold to save photos from email

If I receive an email with a photo attached, I can no longer simply tap and hold the image to open the options to save the image to my phone. I've looked online and in the Apple forums already and the advice that I have seen includes:

• perhaps there is not enough storage left on my phone (I have over 100 gigs of storage available)
• I might need to update (my phone is updated to the latest OS)
• I need to do a restart and the problem will fix itself (many restarts later and the problem continues)

I've had my phone for maybe four months and for the first two months or so there was no issue, and I could save images as usual. But then, seemingly out of nowhere, this functionality has stopped. Most of the similar questions that I was seeing on the Apple forums were from a few years ago or more, so I figured I'd ask again in case this is a new known thing.
