Shared iPad -> screen timeout
Good day,
Is there a document somewhere that points to how long the screen timeout is on the shared iPad OS devices? Also is there any plan to allow more than 2 minutes?
iPad, iOS 12

Good day, thank you for the reply
Yes that would be the case if these were not configured as Shared iPadOS devices. Our devices are enrolled using ABM/Intune. The users login to the device using their managed Apple ID's.
I'm looking for the documentation from Apple as to why they set this at 2 minutes and didn't make it manageable through an EMM/MDM.
But yes thank you for your reply.
Your auto-lock timeout is configured from iPad settings:
Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto Lock - select timeout from 2/5/10/15 minutes, or Never
iPad auto-lock will be fixed at two minutes if you have enabled Low Power mode:
Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode
If your iPad is centrally managed by a business or educational establishment, you may have a policy-enforced auto-lock - and may be unable to configure or change this (and other) settings.
If the problem persists after disabling Low Power Mode, perform a forced-restart of your iPad:
You might also check that Date & Time and TimeZone are also correctly set for your iPad - as these settings are known to cause various functional issues if incorrectly configured:
Settings > General > Date & Time
No this setting is not available to administrators, if it is -> which EMM are you using?
the setting is not available in JAMF or MS Intune.
As a reminder this is using the Shared iPad configuration where multiple people are able to sign into the iPad using a managed Apple ID. This is not a single user setup or a kiosk mode setup.
Also I am talking about the screen timeout...not the password timeout.
As shown here -> Sign in to Shared iPad with Apple School Manager - Apple Support (CA)
that is for the School Manager not the Business manager...ABM has less functionality support.
That is not the correct command. That is an old article.
These are the setting I have setup in Endpoint...but the screen will still turn off after 2 minutes. I imagine it's the same for JAMF configured. So it's not the user timeout that I'm having troubles with it's the screen timeout. But I'll configure 1 iPad in JAMF to verify.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm in the same situation using Meraki Systems Manager. No matter what i set the user session timeout to, the iPad logs off after two minutes.
Changing the setting to 600 seconds makes no difference in shared iPad. We use SSO Federated with Azure but SSO doesn't seem to make a difference either. Apple states in its business manager user guide 5 minutes is the maximum value however all of ours log off after 2 minutes. This is a deal breaker for us if Apple doesn't correct this.
It's 100% available in Jamf. It can be set either in the pre-stage enrollment, or you can send a command (or mass command) that modifies shared device settings and specifies the user session time out.
Solved: Shared iPad autolock time - Jamf Nation Community - 139880
here is a semi work around that does break within JAMF but it is clearly stated that the device timeout cannot be changed. So I'm looking for the Apple doc that states this.
This is entirely up to the administrator. I can set the value on my shared iPads to whatever I want. I choose 90 seconds for security reasons. Other administrators may have other standards.
Contact your MDM provider for support. My MDM allows me to configure the value with a minimum of 30 seconds. I don't have a maximum if I choose to enforce session times.
Hello Derek,
I find myself tackling the same issue. Were you able to find a solution to this?
