Deleting photos in my messages not deleting from icloud

I recently got the warning that my icloud storage was getting full, with Messages using up 21.4GB. I went ahead and deleted the photos, links and attachments within the messages so that my top conversations are now <500MB. I also made sure to clear out the "Recently Deleted" messages from Messages>Edit. However, the amount of icloud Storage used by Messages is still 21.4GB. I noticed that when I tap on the info option for a given message sender, there are no more photos listed. That screen does still show that there are 57 images in icloud. How to I go about deleting those images? What steps am I missing here in order to reduce the amount of icloud storage used? Thanks!

Hi willypan5,

It sounds like the "Top Conversations" is not containing the media which the Messages app shows is still present.

See if you can locate those items by following these steps:

Find attachments from a conversation
1. Open the message.
2. Tap the name of the contact at the top of the message. If you're using iOS 14 or earlier, or iPadOS, tap the Info button .
3. You'll see Photos, Links, Documents, and more. Touch and hold an image or attachment to show options like Save, Copy, Share, and Delete.
From your conversations page in iOS 16.2 and later, you can also search to find photos in Messages based on their content, like a dog, car, person, or text.

You can also check on your iPhone in the Photos app > Recently Deleted, to see if any deleted photos went there instead.

Take care!

Hi willypan5,

We will be happy to help you out. In order to find what is taking up iCloud storage space, you'll need to follow the steps outlined in Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

Specifically:

"Make more space available in iCloud

If you run out of iCloud storage, your device won’t back up to iCloud, new photos and videos won't upload to iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive, other iCloud apps, and messages won't stay up to date across your devices. And you also won't be able to send or receive emails with your iCloud email address.

You can free up storage in iCloud by deleting content that you're not using:

Before you delete anything, you might want to archive or make copies of the information that you store in iCloud."

We hope this helps you.

Cheers.

Hi jmarse1,

Thanks for replying and trying to help, but your reply was not helpful. I've already gone through the steps described. What I'm stuck with is that icloud is saying Messages is using up 21.4 GB but my Top Conversations only takes up 487.2 MB. There are images in icloud associated with a given contact that I cannot figure out how to delete. Please see attached images to understand what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

Will
