Does Time Machine work with APFS formating?

I have a 2 TB HD I want to use to back up via Time Machine. Its format is APFS.

All instructions online say use HFS (Journaled). How can I convert to HFS? Erasing with Disk Utility Disk Utility doesn't provide that option.

Thanks.

What instructions? They appear to be wrong.

It doesn't matter if you succeed erasing it to HFS+, Time Machine will format it APFS (Case-Sensitive) because that is how it is supposed to work.
