I recently bought a new Mac mini computer and moved the Time Machine from the old one and designated it to the new computer. Now I can't go back very far in history. It seems to have lost the years of history and is only backing up the new computer. The external drive is 4 GB and the info indicates it is still almost full.
Can anyone explain this and help?

The key is your phrase “designating it to the new computer”.
What you probably mean by this is that when you started interacting with Time Machine on your new computer, you were asked a question about whether this was, in fact, a new computer, and you responded affirmatively.
In that case, your Time Machine backup disk will contain two very different backups: one for your old computer and one for your new one.
Use Finder to view the top level contents of your Time Machine backup disk, and you will discover folders there associated with the computer names. Choose the appropriate folder in the Time Machine app.
