Apple ID is "invalid or not supported", cannot play iTunes purchased prior to 2008

Tried to reset a long inactive Apple ID to play iTunes, but received a reply saying "This Apple ID is not valid or not supported". A screen shot copy of this message was sent to Apple rep in a chat, whose only advice was to reset the password. Question: how in blazes can one reset a password when the Apple/iTunes system fails to recognize the user ID is neither valid nor supported? I tried purchasing a second song of one that fails to play. Yes, the second purchase plays but Apple failed to drop the purchase cost, unlike another thread suggested.

It sounds like you're running up against this:

https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/icloud/en/terms.html

VII. B "In addition, Apple may terminate your Account upon 30 days’ prior notice via email to the address associated with your Account if (a) your Account has been inactive for one (1) year; or (b) there is a general discontinuance of the Service or any part thereof."

Hello,

Unfortunately for help with that you will need to contact Apple. Contact Apple. Click here --> Choose your country or region - Official Apple Support Select your country, then a product. If you don't see one that handles your issue then keep experimenting with selections until you reach one that gets you a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

or:

Contact Apple for support and service by telephone --> Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

Thanks for the reply, Limnos. I tried to reset the password for the long dead account but even the Apple system rejected same, saying that the (dead) account is "invalid or not supported". Basically, once an account dies through long inaction, Apple basically prohibits anyone from accessing those songs previously, and legitimately bought. Which was basically the answer the Apple rep gave to me in a chat yesterday.
