Key combo's on start up

I’m trying to get a late 2009 iMac and to boot from the CD and I understand the key combinations to accomplish this, but it never says how long to hold down that key combination. Does it make a difference if I hold the key combination a short time after the bong sound or do I need to hold it down until I get a new screen?
