Apple Watch connected to wifi but email not working

My Apple Watch connects to wifi when my phone is dead, but always says no connection available on the mail app when I try to check or send email. It showed the wifi sign in the control center. When my watch is connected to my phone it updates the email and lets me email on my phone.
