Contacts Not Fully Sync'ing on iMac

I'm curious... what causes Contacts, on the iMac, to stop fully synchronizing with iCloud?

Updates from iCloud are flowing to iPhones + iPad + iMac.

Updates on iMac are not flowing to iCloud...

a) neither the creation of new contacts

b) nor updates to existing contacts

c) nor adding a contact to a list

As noted in this separate post - Contacts not sync in macbook pro - Apple Community - on the iMac I went to Settings and unchecked the Sync for Contacts, waited a couple minutes, then re-checked it... no change - a) neither the creation of new contacts, b) nor updates to existing contacts, c) nor adding a contact to a list were flowing from iMac to iCloud.

So I logged into iCloud and re-created the updates and they flowed to all devices

AND

the original entries on the iMac - the ones that did not propagate - they started to multiply, inconsistently:

i) two items were in Contacts one additional time

ii) one item was in Contacts two additional times

iii) another item was in Contacts 7 additional times

etc.

This looks to have started just yesterday afternoon... and it's inconsistent

a) some of the items that would not flow from iMac to iCloud were after some that did and before others that did... they were "in the middle of the day"

b) some items that are creating multiple additional copies were updated by me just now in iCloud and others were not

Any/all help will be appreciated.

I'm on MacOS Monterey 12.6.3 (I'd be on newer if Apple would allow that on this circa 2015 iMac which still runs 100% just fine).

Thanks,

Michael

Hello Michael VanVooren,

Let's check under the Internet Account option in System Preferences to make sure that your Mac isn't set to sync your contacts with another email account.

You'll also want to use the steps below to boot into safe mode to see if that behavior persists from there:

1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

You can also find those steps in this resource: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

It can take a few extra minutes to boot into safe mode. Your screen may flash or flicker while in safe mode. Those behaviors are expected. Testing in safe mode runs a check on your disk, removes some cached files, and can help isolate conflicts with startup items. Once you've tested that behavior in safe mode, you can restart to leave safe mode.

Let us know what you find, and we'll keep moving forward based on your results.

Regards.

Hey there Michael VanVooren,

The following steps could help if contacts are not syncing to iCloud:

1. Check the system status of iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders for services outages or connection issues.
2. If a reminder isn't showing up on some of your devices, make sure that your iPhone and iPad have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, or that your Mac has the latest version of macOS.
3. Make sure that you're signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on all of your devices. Then, check that you turned on Contacts, Calendars, and Reminders in your iCloud settings.
4. Check that the date and time settings on your device are correct for your current location.

Refresh your calendars

You can refresh your calendars from the Calendars app:
1. Open the Calendar app.
2. From the View menu, choose Refresh Calendars.
Since the iCloud Birthdays calendar updates hourly, you might not see changes to birthdays in the Contacts or Calendars app for an hour.

Check your default Calendar, Reminders, and Contacts account

If you store and edit your events in iCloud instead of another place, like On My Mac, Exchange, or Google, then iCloud automatically updates your calendars. If you use multiple accounts on your Mac like iCloud, Gmail, and Yahoo, make sure that iCloud is your default Calendar account:
1. Open the Calendar app.
2. Choose Calendar > Settings. In macOS Monterey or earlier, choose Calendar > Preferences.
3. In the General tab, make sure that one of your iCloud calendars is the default.

If you store and edit your contacts in iCloud instead of another place, like On My Mac, Exchange, or Google, then iCloud automatically updates your contacts. If you use multiple accounts on your Mac like iCloud, Gmail, and Yahoo, make sure that iCloud is your default Contacts account:
1. Open the Contacts app.
2. Choose Contacts > Accounts.
3. Click the iCloud tab. Make sure that you're signed in with your Apple ID and that Contacts is enabled.
As long as you've turned on Reminders in iCloud Settings, your iCloud reminders appear on your Mac.

Delete completed or overdue reminders

1. Open the Reminders app.
2. Go to the Today view and check for any overdue reminders.
3. If you find any, check the empty circle to complete the reminder, or delete the reminder.

Repeat these steps on each device that's using iCloud Reminders.

Restart your computer
After you restart your computer, check if you fixed the issue.

Take care.

First, please let me apologize for this belated response... I saw it right after you sent it and the got distracted.

I just went through all the steps you helpfully shared and... everything matches as you noted.

AND

I just updated a note in a contact on the iMac

AND

it's NOT on the iPad.

harumph.... bummer... NOT your fault... just sharing that it didn't work.

THANK YOU for your help.

If you can think of anything more, please do share.

Thanks,

Michael

AnnieL2,

yes, that is what I have done… using both Chrome and Safari, logging into iCloud…

those changes made in Contacts on the iMac are not always flowing to the iCloud…

Those changes from the iPad or iPhone or the browser are in iCloud and are seen in Contacts on the iMac.

Cloud-to-iMac looks good.

iMac-to-iCloud is inconsistent.

I have, on iMac, gone to Settings and turned off sync with iCloud and turned back on… a couple times… did not resolve this issue.

I welcome additional help so we can fully resolve this.

Thank you.
