smbd service not responding to traffic

The smbd service appears to just stop responding to traffic after a period of time.

I have a Windows 11 laptop and a MacBook Pro laptop that access shared folders from a mac-mini nunning macOS Ventura. Normally this works fine. Packet analysis has shown that TCP traffic is being received by the mac-mini, but the smbd service just fails to respond. The smbd process is still listed in a `ps` list.

Restarting the smbd process resolves the problem temporarily. But it fails again anywhere from a few minutes later to a few later hours.

Any ideas what's causing this and how to prevent it?

Other specs:

Mac mini, M1, 2020

macOS Ventura 13.2.1.

The problem was the same before upgrading from macOS Monterey.

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities Malkster,

If sharing your Mac mini works intermittently, the following guidance may be helpful:

Check your connection settings

Server Message Block (SMB) 3 is the default way to connect to a server in macOS. It requires the connection to perform a validate negotiate request after it authenticates. All SMB 3 sessions must be signed unless you connect as a guest or anonymously.
You might have a macOS file server that's an Open Directory client and is anonymously bound to a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server. If so, use one of these methods to connect:
* When you connect to the LDAP server, use authenticated binding.
* Change the role of the file server to an Open Directory replica. This also sets up kerberos on your server.
* Disable validate negotiate requests on your client.
* Set up your SMB server or client to use only SMB 2.

You can find this information, along with additional guidance you may find helpful, here: If you can't mount SMB share hosted by a Mac bound to Open Directory

Take care!
