Apps added to or removed from Silence Notifications From also added to or removed from Allow Notifications From

In Focus - Do Not Disturb, if you add an app to Silence Notifications From, it also appears in Allow Notifications From. If you remove it from one, it removes it from the other. How can an app be allowed and silenced at the same time?

Hi steveald,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that when you add apps to Focus to silence the notifications, the same apps are also added to Allow Notifications.

Are you still receiving notifications for the apps that aren't allowed while Focus is enabled?

You can learn more about customizing your Focus Settings here: Allow or silence notifications for a Focus on iPhone - Apple Support

Do you have a notification summary enabled as well? This article will show you how to check: Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

"Schedule a notification summary

With iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later, you can schedule times to receive a summary of notifications each day so you can catch up when it's convenient for you. The summary is personalized to you and ordered by priority based on how you use your apps, with the most relevant notifications at the top.

To schedule a notification summary:

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, then turn on Scheduled Summary.
  2. Under Apps in Summary, select the apps that you want to include in your notification summary.
  3. Under Schedule, tap the Add button  to add a new schedule or the Remove button  to remove a schedule. Then adjust the time for each scheduled summary you have set up.

To add new apps to the summary, go back to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and select the apps under Apps in Summary. Each app appears with a number showing the average number of notifications that you receive each day from that app."

We look forward to your reply.

Cheers!

Allow Notifications From and Silence Notifications From are mutually exclusive. You can enable one or the other, but not both. 99% of the time you should tap Allow Notifications From and chose the apps you want notifications from. Any not listed will be blocked.

As I have 290 apps, it would be a huge effort to make use of Silence Notifications From.

Thanks. I seem to have it working the way I want it to.

It wasn't an issue of receiving notifications from apps that aren't allowed while Focus is enabled. The issue was with the lack of clear instructions. As in, how do I know whether a selected app is being silenced or allowed since all selected apps appear no matter which option is selected?

In the first article you linked to, it would be more helpful to include something along the lines of:

    1. Go to Settings > Focus, then choose a Focus—for example, Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work.
    2. Tap Apps (or tap Choose Apps), then do one of the following:

• Allow specific apps: Tap Allow Notifications From, tap the Add Apps button, then select apps.

• Silence specific apps: Tap Silence Notifications From, tap the Add Apps button, then select apps.

Note: You may only select one option to either Allow or Silence all apps that are added. Selected apps will appear under both options. Allowing some apps while silencing other apps is not possible.

Apps added to or removed from Silence Notifications From also added to or removed from Allow Notifications From
