UNSUPPORTED LIBRARY - The library is from a newer version of Photo'. Please upgrade Photos to open this library. Create New.

I have an iMac 2015 with Big Sur & for some reason my Photos App will not open. "Unsupported Library" and goes on to say "The library Photos is from a newer version of Photos. Please upgrade Photos to open this library" It appears I have version 6, but unable to get a newer version, even by going through updates. Help please!

iMac 27″, macOS 11.7

Did you open the library on a different Mac with a newer system version? Then you can only open them on a Mac with the same system version or a newer system version. You cannot downgrade a Photos Library to an older system version, unless your library is in iCloud Photos Library.

If all your photos and videos are in iCloud, you can simply create anew, empty Photos Library ( Create additional libraries), then make it the System Photos Library and enable iCloud Photos, and wait for your Photos to come back from iCloud.

To see, if your mac can be upgraded to Monterey, use this link to show Monterey at the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-monterey/id1576738294?mt=12

Did you perhaps restore your Mac from am older backup or reinstall the system? Then you may need to update to the current version.

Or photos is trying to open a different library than you are expecting. Try to point Photos directly to your current Photos Library by double-clicking your current Photos Library - by default it should be in your Pictures folder.
