Your MacBook Air already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Install nothing else. Read Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.
Generally speaking no though many of us here use the free version of MalwareBytes and manually scan every week or two.
Get rid of any antivirus apps A.S.A.P. because they are the ones that typically cause panics and other serious issues.
You will find that without that extra, your Mac will run smoother than it has ever been.
