Upgrading Mac from Catalina to Big Sur to support TurboTax2022

Just purchased downloaded version of TurboTax 2022, and its saying I have to upgrade my Mac OS (now Catalina 10.15.7, to Big Sur 10.16). I have been reluctant to do any OS upgrades on my Mac (which I purchased refurbished in late 2015) since the last upgrade was quite a hassle. When I check my 'Available Downloads' on Mac, it says I should upgrade to OS Monterey (which I cannot tell if TurboTax will support, but assume so?). Any advice? If I am going to upgrade my OS, I feel I should upgrade to the latest, Monterey, but will that be supported by Turbo Tax?

Thanks for any advice.

They support Monterey. See the following from TurboTax https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/tta-system-requirements for the system requirements for their 2022 download version:

  • macOS Big Sur 11 or later (macOS Catalina 10.15 not supported)
    • Specific macOS: macOS Big Sur 11, macOS Monterey 12, macOS Ventura 13

If you had elected to use their online version (which is excellent in my opinion) your Catalina or even older Mojave would be supported. Something to consider in the future. See: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/system-requirements

Regarding the upgrade, I would upgrade to the latest version your Mac supports (which would be Monterey if it is a 2015). Catalina was a major upgrade due to being the last version to support 32 bit apps so you shouldn't experience a hassle going from Catalina to Monterey.

Only Intuit can say if they do/will support their software on Monterey or Ventura, so that's a question to ask them.

If you keep your macOS updated regularly, then your major upgrades to newer versions tends to go more smoothly.

And of course, the follow applies before you do any upgrade:

❗️– IMPORTANT! – Backup your data. (You’ve been warned.)
