iCloud Advanced

I have a few Macs, some old, some new and I want to enable iCloud Advanced.

Some of these Macs can support an OS that will work with iCloud Advanced, some won't.

It's important that the sync services provided by iCloud should continue to operate across all my Macs so that things such as diaries (and others) are synced across all devices.

If I update to iCloud Advanced, thereby logging some Macs out of iCloud, can I then log the older Macs back in to some degree such that they will sync the essentials even though they may not have access to the full iCloud data?

I guess this comes down to whether all the Macs can still have access to folders in iCloud Drive where various apps store their sync data.

Thanks!

Mac mini, macOS 13.2

Hello ApexRidge,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. We'd like to help share some information with you. In order to be able to use Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, all your linked devices must meet the requirements to use this feature as listed here: How to turn on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud - Apple Support

Requirements

To turn on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, you need:
* An Apple ID with two-factor authentication.
* A passcode or password set for your device.
* At least one account recovery contact or recovery key. If you don't already have one, you'll be guided to set one up when you turn on Advanced Data Protection.
* Updated software on all of the devices where you're signed in with your Apple ID:
* iPhone with iOS 16.2 or later
* iPad with iPadOS 16.2 or later
* Mac with macOS 13.1 or later
* Apple Watch with watchOS 9.2 or later
* Apple TV with tvOS 16.2 or later
* HomePod with software version 16.0 or later
* Windows computer with iCloud for Windows 14.1 or later

You won't be able to enable this feature until you remove devices that don't meet requirements from your Apple ID. The resource we shared states the following:

If one of your devices prevents you from turning on Advanced Data Protection, you can choose to remove that device from your Apple ID device list and try again. While Advanced Data Protection is enabled for your account, you can sign in with your Apple ID only on devices that meet the software requirements listed above.

Your older devices will not be able to sync data with iCloud nor gain access to the iCloud website:

When you turn on Advanced Data Protection, access to your iCloud data on the web at iCloud.com is disabled to ensure that your data is available only on your trusted devices.

We hope this information is helpful. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Take care.
