mac mini M2 will not send sound to

Mac mini M2 hooked up to a LS27A800U Samsung 4K monitor (with speakers). Output channel under sound shows the monitor correctly and when I highlight, no sound. If I choose any of the speakers in my house (Sonos), Apple TV or Samsung TVs music will play via Airplay. The monitor, hooked up by HDMI, won't play music or any computer sound effects.

What gives? Volume is up, mute is not engaged on the monitor or the Mac software. In fact when I choose the output as the monitor the output volume is not an option (greyed out). Any ideas?

Are you certain that the monitor has speakers?

Can you confirm that the audio works when the monitor is connected to any other computer or video device or even with USB-C?

I ask this specifically because upon looking at the specs for this model at Samsung's website, there seems to be conflicting info regarding sound.

The market-speak of the main description page shows a pic of the monitor and some text about speakers. However, if you drop down into the specifications, it has this for Audio: Speaker - No.

Samsung said yes on speakers, and in the pics it says reduce clutter on desktop with the internal speakers. ill call them again tomorrow but I agree they have confliciting data on the website.
