Apple car play not working properly

Just just got a new car, apple car play is not working well, using a fully updated iPhone 12 Pro Max. Connects and plays, but plays the songs out of order, will play the same song over and over, out of a large playlist will only play a handful of songs. Contacted the dealer Kia who recommended a third party app rather than iTunes, which seems a bit odd, surely iTunes should be compatible with apple car play. Any advice greatly appreciated.
