Transferring SIM card IPhone 7 to IPhone 14

Couple questions!


i have an iPhone 7, iOS 15.7.3, and I am interested in getting an IPhone 14. I’ve heard that the iPhone 14 e-sim card transfer requires the old phone to be at least iOS 16.


Question 1) What would be the steps to go about transferring an iPhone 7 Verizon Physical Sim Card into an iPhone 14 e-sim?


Question 2) If I contact my carrier, would my new iPhone end up being “carrier locked” to Verizon only? Is there a way to ensure that my phone isn’t locked to a certain carrier? For example, like if I were to go to Japan or international countries, I know that there’s limits with Verizon.


Question 3) Is there an IOS requirement to transfer iCloud backup data from iPhone 7 to new iPhone 14, or no IOS requirement?

  1. Physical SIM cards cannot transfer to eSIM. You may transfer your cellular service through your provider. Further, even if you could transfer your SIM to an iPhone 14 physical SIM slot, you would lose the ability to ever upgrade the iPhone 14 to 5G cellular.
  2. I’m not sure what “contact my carrier” has to do with locking a future iPhone. Also, when you mention international travel, you should be aware an iPhone 14 purchased in the United States is eSIM only - there is no SIM card slot.
  3. There is no requirement. However, it’s hard to imagine why you would choose not to restore your data from your backup. And, of course, the iOS version on each iPhone has nothing to do with a backup or restore (except the iOS version of the iPhone receiving the backup must be greater than or equal to the old iPhone).
